Understanding Chamonix and Its Neighbourhoods
We will dive into each area more below, but here’s a quick look at the main areas to stay in Chamonix so you can get a feel for the layout and understand the area a bit better. The area of Chamonix is largely made up of three spots: Chamonix Town Centre, Les Praz and Les Houches.
Best Accommodation in Chamonix Town Centre (Perfect for First-Time Visitors

An overview of Chamonix Town Centre
Chamonix town centre is the most sought-after area to stay in, and for good reason. It’s where we stayed during our trip, and the spot we’d recommend for first-time visitors.
The main advantage of staying in Chamonix centre is convenience. You’ll be within walking distance of the town’s cable cars, boutique shops, cosy cafés, and an incredible range of restaurants. It’s also where the main bus stop and transfer drop-off points are located, which means you can easily reach your accommodation without needing to book a private taxi upon arrival.
Everything in Chamonix centre is wonderfully walkable, from relaxing public spas and lively après-ski bars to artisan bakeries and souvenir shops filled with local crafts. Dining options are impressively diverse too; you’ll find everything from authentic Indian and Mexican spots to traditional Savoyard fondue and even Michelin-starred French cuisine.
For those short on time or visiting without a car, staying in the heart of Chamonix is ideal. You’ll have everything you need on your doorstep and can easily access the main ski lifts or hiking trails. Just note that this is the liveliest part of town, so if you’re after complete peace and quiet, you might prefer one of the nearby villages like Les Praz or Les Houches.

Tips for Booking Accommodation in Chamonix
1. Book Early
Hotels in Chamonix can sell out quickly, especially during the peak seasons, winter (December to February) and summer (July to August). Prices also increase during those times, so if this is when you opt to travel to Chamonix, make sure that you book as soon as you’re able to, to avoid extra costs.
2. Be Flexible with Dates for the Best Deals
Which brings me to my next point. During the peak seasons, the prices of hotels increase. So, if you’re able to, keep flexible with your plans and travel during off-peak season instead to enjoy more budget-friendly prices at hotels in Chamonix.
3. Read Reviews and Check Ratings
This is something I often find people forgetting to do when choosing where to stay. Reviews can be among the most important factors that you should consider when booking a hotel. They offer real-life reviews of what other guests think, sometimes showing off parts of the hotel that the hotel wouldn’t feature.
I only usually book a hotel if it has a rating of 8+; if it’s lower than that and I really want to stay there, then I’ll read through the reviews. Sometimes they can be about things that wouldn’t bother me or aren’t relevant, e.g. no parking, walking distance to the main area, but it’s the location I’m looking for, not great food, but I’m opting for a room-only rate. However, I do care about cleanliness, WIFI, friendly staff, etc., so if it is a low rating, just make sure that it’s not for something that is important to you.
4. Use Trusted Booking Platforms
Sometimes booking directly through the hotel can be the best way to get the best price. But, generally, I find that booking through a hotel booking platform, such as booking.com or hotels.com, is the best way to find the cheapest prices.
This is because these platforms generally get the best price for what’s called a ‘closed user group’, which is when the customer has to create an account and enter a password to see the prices, which allows hotels to share even cheaper ones than they would usually list to everyone.
Now you’ve decided where to stay in Chamonix, it’s time to decide what to do. I recommend reading my full guide on the top 21 things to see and do in Chamonix!
If you’re heart’s not fully set on Chamonix, and you’re still deciding where to take a winter break, then I recommend also looking at Zermatt. It’s a gorgeous mountain town at the base of the Matterhorn in Switzerland. You can read our full guide on Zermatt here.
Frequently Asked Questions about Accommodation in Chamonix
For first-time visitors, the Chamonix town centre is the best area to stay in. You’ll find the main lifts, bus stops, shops, and restaurants all within walking distance, making it the most convenient base for exploring Mont Blanc and Chamonix.
Staying in the centre means you’ll have easy access to cable cars like Aiguille du Midi, plenty of après-ski spots, and a great mix of accommodation in Chamonix, from budget-friendly hotels to luxury stays. If you’d prefer somewhere quieter but still close to everything, Les Praz is another lovely option just a short walk or bus ride away.
Yes, as a non-skiier, I can confidently say, Chamonix isn’t just for skiers! It’s one of the most scenic destinations in the French Alps, and there’s so much to do even if you don’t ski.
You can ride the Aiguille du Midi cable car for panoramic views of Mont Blanc, relax in a mountain spa, wander the town’s boutique shops, or enjoy long lunches in cosy alpine restaurants. Many visitors book accommodation in Chamonix simply for the winter atmosphere, and don’t set foot on a ski slope.
Ideally, spend at least 3 to 4 days in Chamonix to make the most of your trip. That gives you enough time to explore the town, head up the Aiguille du Midi, visit nearby attractions like Mer de Glace, and still enjoy some downtime. If you’re travelling for skiing, 5–7 days is perfect.

Located right in the town centre, it combines alpine elegance with five-star comfort, offering a spa by Clarins, a year-round outdoor pool with mountain views, and an award-winning restaurant. It’s ideal for couples or anyone looking for a refined retreat at the foot of Mont Blanc.
