Chamonix is an immensely popular destination for skiers and non-skiers alike. Its close proximity to Mont Blanc and its beautiful little town, surrounded by mountains makes it a popular destination in the summer and winter. However, as it doesn’t have its own airport, reaching Chamonix isn’t as simple as just hopping on a plane.

In this guide, we’ll detail how to get to Chamonix, explore which airports are nearby, and explain how to travel between them.

Where is Chamonix, France?

Chamonix is a picturesque alpine town set in the heart of the French Alps, near the borders of Switzerland and Italy. It sits at the foot of Mont Blanc, the highest mountain in Western Europe, and is part of the Haute-Savoie region in southeastern France.

Chamonix is 245 square kilometres (about 95 square miles) in size. But, despite its relatively small size, it boasts a big reputation as a world-famous hub for outdoor enthusiasts. With just under 10,000 residents, the town maintains a cosy, alpine village vibe all year round and welcomes visitors worldwide.

Closest Airports to Chamonix

There are several closest airports to Chamonix, Geneva Airport (GVA) being the nearest to Chamonix, located approximately 100 kilometres away.

Other airports close to Chamonix include Chambéry, Lyon, and Grenoble. Lyon Airport is 220 kilometres away, and it takes approximately 2.5 hours to reach by car. Grenoble Airport is 150 kilometres away, and it takes about 2 hours to reach. All three airports provide transfer options, including shuttles, private taxis, and car rentals.

Geneva Airport

Geneva Airport is the closest and most popular option for travelling to Chamonix.

Located just 100 kilometres away, it typically takes around 1.5 hours by car or airport transfer. As a major international airport, Geneva offers tons of flight connections around the world making it popular and the most convenient for overseas visitors.

If travelling from Geneva Airport to Chamonix, there are tons of transfer options, including private shuttles, shared minibuses, and rental cars, ensuring seamless travel to the resort. The main advantages of flying into Geneva are the short travel time and the availability of frequent, reliable transfers to Chamonix.

Chambéry Airport

Chambéry Airport is 140 kilometres from Chamonix, and the drive takes approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes to drive between the two.

It’s one of the closest airports to Chamonix, however, as it is a smaller regional airport, it offers limited flight options, often seasonal, and caters primarily to winter holidaymakers. Transfers are available but may be less frequent than those from Chamonix or other more distant airports.

Lyon Airport

Lyon Airport is about 220 kilometres from Chamonix, with a drive time of approximately 2.5 hours.

This airport is one of France’s largest airports, meaning there are a lot of flights arriving from multiple areas across the world.

The airport is well-connected by transfers such as shuttles, private cars, and buses. The slightly longer distance and travel time can be a drawback, but the variety of flights and transport options often make up for it.

Grenoble Airport

Grenoble Airport is a little further away, situated roughly 150 kilometres from Chamonix. It takes roughly 2 hours to travel between the airport and Chamonix.

While the airport is slightly farther than Chambéry or Geneva, it can still be a popular airport to fly into. However, like Chambéry, the availability of flights can be limited, and transfer options may require pre-booking to ensure you manage to get a space. 

What is the easiest airport to get to Chamonix?

The easiest airport to fly into to get to Chamonix is Geneva Airport. Travelling between these two spots takes just 1.5 hours and can easily be accessed via a shared shuttle, private transfer, car hire, train, or taxi.

You can reach Chamonix from Geneva Airport via public transport, such as a combination of trains and buses, although direct shuttle services are the fastest and most popular option.

How to get to Chamonix

The easiest and most popular way to get to Chamonix is to fly into Geneva airport and then travel by bus to Chamonix. Chamonix does not have an airport so flying direct isn’t possible.

If Geneva isn’t an option Chambéry Airport (CMF) is about 145 kilometres away and is also a good option for airports near Chamonix, this airport is mainly used for flights to the Alps from the UK and other European destinations. However, flights from Geneva Airport to Chamonix are usually cheaper.

How to Get to Chamonix from Outside Europe

Getting to Chamonix from outside Europe is fairly straightforward and hardly any different than travelling to Chamonix from another European destination.

If travelling to Chamonix from outside Europe, then the closest major international airport is Geneva Airport (GVA) in Switzerland, which, as mentioned, is just over an hour’s drive away.

From Geneva, you can book a direct transfer service to Chamonix, rent a car, or take a combination of trains and buses.

If your destination doesn’t fly to Geneva then you can also opt to fly into Paris or Milan and connect via a high-speed train or opt for a regional flight to Geneva. Whether you’re travelling from North America, Asia, or anywhere else in the world, Chamonix is well-connected due to its close proximity to Geneva Airport and other major airports.

How to get to Chamonix from Geneva Airport

Now that we know which airport to fly to, let’s dive into how to get from Geneva Airport to Chamonix.

Travelling between the Swiss City and the small French town is simple. You can travel directly from Geneva Airport so there is no need to make your way into the city before heading to Chamonix.

From Geneva airport, you can either pre-book your transfer. It is worth noting here that you can’t buy your transfer ticket at the airport, this must be purchased online before.

When it comes to choosing a transfer from Geneva Airport to Chamonix, the nearest airport near Chamonix, there are several companies to choose between.

We travelled with Alpine Fleet and were very happy with the service, despite leaving 30 minutes later than the scheduled departure.

Airport transfers between Geneva and Chamonix cost around £12 – £20 pp per way. If booked in advance, and depending on times transfers can be cheaper.

Buses run approximately once every hour from Geneva Airport.

How to get from Chambéry Airport to Chamonix

Another airport that is close to Chamonix Chambéry Airport. Travelling from Chambéry Airport to Chamonix is straightforward, with a few options available. Chambéry Airport is approximately 145 kilometres from Chamonix, and the journey takes about 2 to 2.5 hours by car.

The easiest way to travel between the two spots is by private transfer or taxi. However, you can also take a train to Saint-Gervais-les-Bains followed by a connecting bus or local transfer to Chamonix. During the winter season, check for shuttle services that may operate directly between Chambéry and Chamonix. 

Renting a car to drive to Chamonix

Renting a car allows you the flexibility to travel to and around Chamonix as and when you want. You can hire a car directly from Geneva (the closest airport near Chamonix)or Chambéry Airport to Chamonix.

Renting a car gives you ultimate flexibility with your destination and timing. However, it can end up costing you more than a simple airport transfer, especially if you are travelling with just one other person or by yourself.

On the other hand, renting a car and splitting costs for rental, fuel, and insurance can be significantly cheaper than booking separate tours, especially if you’re staying in staying in Chamonix for more than a few days or visiting different parts of France or Switzerland.

Driving to Chamonix

Driving to Chamonix is a popular option if you’re visiting from nearby European cities.

Here are some key routes that you might like to use to travel to Chamonix:

  • Paris to Chamonix: The journey from Paris to Chamonix is approximately 615 km and takes around 6.5 hours via the A6 and A40 motorways. Tolls cost around €60–€70.
  • Milan to Chamonix: From Milan, it’s a shorter trip of about 220 km, taking roughly 3 hours. The route passes through the Mont Blanc Tunnel, with a one-way toll of around €50.
  • Geneva to Chamonix: A quick drive of 1.5 hours over 85–100 km. The main route follows the A40 motorway. Tolls cost approximately €5–€10.

The roads to Chamonix are generally well-maintained, but during winter, snow chains or winter tyres are essential due to icy conditions.

There aren’t many parking options in Chamonix, especially during peak (winter) ski season. Free and paid parking areas, including underground garages like Parking Saint-Michel and Parking Entrèves. If you’re opting to drive to Chamonix, then it’s advisable to book parking in advance if possible.

Getting around Chamonix

Once you arrive in Chamonix, it’s fairly easy to get around. We actually just walked around the whole time we were here as we find this the best way to see the place we’re in and get a feel for it.

However, if you’re in a rush or don’t fancy walking then, luckily for you, Chamonix has a great transport system. Plus, best of all, it’s free to use as long as you have a guest card (ask your chalet host or hotel reception for a ‘carte d’hôte’).

Local buses run up and down the valley between Servoz, Les Houches and Le Tour and stop regularly.

The main lines are number 1 and number 2, but all lines stop at Cham Sud and Place du Mont Blanc, if you want to travel further you can hop on a main coach out of town.

The other option for travelling around Chamonix is via the Mont Blanc train. It leaves once an hour and runs between Vallorcine and Saint-Gervais-les-Bains-Le Fayet, where you can connect to the ski lift to access the St. Gervais ski area or catch an SNCF train to other destinations in France.

While travel between Servoz and Vallorcine is free with a guest card, there is a small fee for journeys beyond this, including:
