During the winter months you’re almost guranteed snow in Chamonix (especially at the higher altitudes) so if that, along with the highest mountain in Europe (Mont Blanc), and a cute little mountain town is what you’re looking for, then I highly recommend a visit to Chamonix.

I visited earlier this year and absolutely loved it. I also, couldn’t believe just how much there was there to see and do. I felt like a barely even scratched the surface when it came to see’ing and doing all of the wonderful things there were on offer.

There are so many things to do in Chamonix, especially during Chamonix in winter, that it can be hard to decide what to do first.

Surrounded by mountains, you’d be forgiven for thinking you were at the heart of a cheesy Christmas Hallmark film.

But there’s a common misconception that the town of Chamonix is just for skiers. Well, we’re here to tell you otherwise! There are so many things to do in Chamonix in winter, from riding the Aiguille du Midi to rambling along Chamonix’s charming streets and relaxing in QC Terme Chamonix.

The top 21 things to do in Chamonix, France

1. Ride the cable car up to Aiguille du Midi – One of the top things to do in Chamonix

If you only do one thing in Chamonix, make it this! Take the Aiguille du Midi cable car—the highest in France.

Ascending to an altitude of 3,842m, you’ll enjoy incredible views of Mont Blanc and its glaciers. From the top, and the multiple viewing platforms, you’ll have 360º views across France, Italy, and Switzerland. Don’t forget to wrap up warmly, when we were at the top it was -16 degrees and freezing!

Also, it’s worth noting that:
1. Your views might be hidden by the clouds (ours were 90% of the time) and
2. It’s HIGH. So, if you’re scared of heights, this might not be the activity for you, even though it is one of the top things to do in Chamonix in winter or any season.

2. Walk along Bois du Bouchet

Only a few moments outside of the town of Chamonix is Bois du Bouchet. A beautiful area in the heart of the fir and spruce trees, at the foot of Mont Blanc. Spend a morning wandering through the trees along the river – in true winter wonderland style. This is one of the best free things to do in Chamonix.

3. Visit QC Terme Chamonix

If you need some relaxation, and really, who isn’t? Then QC Terme Chamonix is just the spot for you. An incredible day spa located in the heart of the Alps. There’s not much better than relaxing in a hot tub whilst snow falls and mountain peaks become visible in the distance.

4. Ride the Ski Lifts

Experience the magic of the mountains without skiing by purchasing a pedestrian lift pass. This pass grants access to a variety of activities and mountain restaurants, with over half accessible on foot via ski lifts. Meaning you still get the views without the need to ski.

5. Go snowshoeing or ski-touring

If you’re feeling adventurous, then buckle up and go snowshoeing. You can book a guided snowshoe walk from €50 per person or an incredible ‘under the stars’ snowshoeing tour. The snow in Chamonix was incredible, so we can imagine a tour would be the highlight of anything to do in Chamonix in winter.

6. Treat yourself to a massage or treatment at one of Chamonix’s wellness centres

After a day of exploring the mountains, there is nothing better than a massage at one of the many wellness centres and spas in Chamonix – including, of course, QC Terme Chamonix. Lucky for you, there’s plenty to choose from in Chamonix. We recommend Spa Deep Nature – Hôtel Les Aiglons Chamonix (this is where we stayed and couldn’t recommend it more!). Perfect if you’re looking for a bit of romance as well.

7. Enjoy an après-ski

You might not have taken part in skiing (or maybe you have), but that certainly doesn’t mean that you don’t deserve an après-ski. After a day of exploring Chamonix, warm up with a drink, soak in the lively atmosphere, and enjoy the iconic après-ski culture this alpine destination is known for.

If you’re looking for a spot to enjoy an Après-Ski in Chamonix, we recommend:

• La Folie Douce – A legendary spot with live music, DJ sets, and a party atmosphere on the slopes.
• Elevation 1904 – A vibrant bar near the base of the Aiguille du Midi cable car, perfect for cocktails and people-watching.
• Monkey Bar – Known for its relaxed vibe, craft beers, and delicious burgers, this is a favourite for locals and visitors alike.
• Chambre Neuf – Famous for its high-energy après-ski parties, live bands, and Scandinavian influences.
• MBC (Micro Brasserie de Chamonix) – A craft brewery offering unique beers and a chilled-out atmosphere.
• Le Vagabond – A cosy bar with a laid-back ambience, ideal for winding down with a pint or hot mulled wine.
• Bighorn Bistro & Bakery – A great spot for après-ski snacks paired with locally crafted brews and speciality cocktails.

8. Explore the Mer de Glace and ice caves

The Mer de Glace is one of Chamonix’s must-visit spots, offering a chance to explore France’s largest glacier up close.

A quick ride on the historic Montenvers Railway takes you to this icy spot, where you can explore the incredible ice caves carved directly into the glacier. Alternatively, you can take the Tramway du Mont Blanc for incredible views across the Alps.

9. Take a tandem paragliding flight

Seeing the Alps from the ground is incredible. But seeing them from above is unforgettable. Take in the stunning views of Le Brevent and Chamonix from the air on a tandem paragliding flight. One of the most impressive things to do in Chamonix in winter (or summer!)

10. Spend a relaxing afternoon at Lac Gaillands

Located at the bottom of the Valley, Lac Gaillands is just a few miles from Chamonix and is the perfect spot to spend some time in nature to admire the incredible views. Walk around the lakes, admire the snow-capped mountains and spend some time in nature – pure perfection.

11. Take a scenic train ride to Les Houches

If you have some spare time, or more than 2 days and are looking for things to do in Chamonix in winter, then hop on a scenic train ride to Les Houches, a charming village just outside Chamonix.

The journey is as relaxing as the destination, offering stunning views of the surrounding alpine landscapes. Once there, you’ll find cosy cafes, picturesque streets, and plenty of spots to soak in the beauty of Mont Blanc.

It’s the perfect way to slow down and enjoy the quieter side of the valley.

12. Go ice skating at the Richard Bozon Sports Centre

You can’t find much to beat this thing to do in Chamonix in winter if you’re looking for a more relaxed activity than a trip up to Aiguille du Midi Chamonix, then this is perfect for you. It is home to an indoor Olympic-sized rink (60 x 30m), which is open daily, and an outdoor rink (26 x 56 m), which is open for the Chamonix winter.

13. Enjoy a Cheese fondue

It might not be a full-day activity (unless you want it to be – we’re not judging), but eating a cheese fondue overlooking the Alps is a must-do when visiting Chamonix in the winter. Hot cheese, cold snow and incredible views. What could be better?

It might be in France, but as Chamonix is so close to Switzerland, you’ll find most restaurants offer cheese fondue.

14. Enjoy a Crêpe

It wouldn’t be a trip to France without indulging in a French delicacy. Enjoy a sweet Crêpe or a Galette – a savoury dish. We loved the goat cheese, honey and vegetable one from Restaurant Le Boccalatte.

15. Stroll through Chamonix’s charming streets & boutique shops

A trip to Chamonix wouldn’t be complete without exploring the delightful little town. It’s larger than some other ski towns, but still small enough not to lose its charm. It’s one of the top things to do in Chamonix.

16. Go Stargazing (and stay in a bubble hut)

With not much light pollution and shorter hours of sunlight, Chamonix in winter is the perfect time to go stargazing. Have the chance to observe alpine wildlife thriving in their natural winter habitat. The mountains are home to a variety of species, including herbivores like chamois, mountain hares, and marmots. You might even spot a fox or, if you’re extremely lucky, the elusive lynx.

As you can see, there’s SO much to see and do in Chamonix. We spent 4 nights here, but we could have easily spent longer, and we’re already planning our next trip back.
