1. Lake Bohinj – Slovenia’s Largest Natural Lake

Honestly, Lake Bohinj blew me away. It’s the largest natural lake in Slovenia and has so much to offer. I stayed for 4 nights and didn’t want to leave.

Lake Bohinj sits inside Triglav National Park, which is Slovenia’s only national park and a candidate for UNESCO World Heritage status. It is the largest natural lake in Slovenia and is framed by the towering Julian Alps. It’s a calmer, more relaxed version of Lake Bled (which I also love!). During the summer months, Lake Bohinj is perfect for swimming and relaxing around, and in the winter, Lake Bohinj becomes a magical winter wonderland, covered in snow and frozen over. Lake Bohinj was my favourite place in Slovenia, and it is certainly one of the best places to visit in Slovenia.

You can walk around the lake (which I recommend you do), the walk is 12 km in total and is fairly flat the whole way. It’s the best way to see the lake and get a feel for your surroundings.  Around the lake, there are plenty of hiking trails that are also absolutely stunning.

I also recommend taking the Panoramic boat from one side of Lake Bohinj to the other or hiring a SUP so that you can paddleboard across it.

If you’re wondering where to stay in Lake Bohinj, I’ve written a handy guide all about the best spots to stay for every budget. However, if you’re short on time, I highly recommend staying in Bohinj ECO Hotel & Wellness, it’s a gorgeous hotel with a spa, restaurant and is located right on the shores of Lake Bohinj.

If you’re short on time or looking to take part in a day trip that includes visiting Lake Bohinj, then I really recommend this tour, it’s great value and includes some of the best spots in Slovenia.

2. Lake Bled – The Most Popular Spot in Slovenia

Without a doubt, Lake Bled is the most famous spot in Slovenia and one of the best places to visit in Slovenia if you like beautiful lakes, fairly easy hiking trails and fairy tale-like spots.

If you’re wondering how to spend the perfect day in Lake Bled, I’ve written a guide all about it here.

To get your bearings, I recommend walking the full circular loop of the lake. It’s 6km in total, will take you around 1.5 hours to walk and is absolutely gorgeous. Then, in the afternoon (if you have any energy left, or more than one day), I recommend hiking up to Ojstrica or Mala Osojnica viewpoint for the best views of Lake Bled, it’s one of the best things to do in Slovenia.

Ojstrica takes around 20 minutes, whilst Mala Osojnica takes around 45 minutes.

If you’re short on time when visiting Lake Bled, I recommend this tour to Lake Bled from Ljubljana.

Check out my detailed guide on the best 12 places to stay in Lake Bled for every budget.

3. Ljubljana – What to See in Slovenia’s Capital

I’m not usually a city person, but Ljubljana blew me away. The city is like a fairy tale with a stunning architecture, a gorgeous river running through it, and a choice of wonderful restaurants. It’s also budget friendly (for a European city) and is very walkable.

What to see in Ljubljana, Slovenia:

Ljubljana Castle
– ride the funicular or hike up for city views.
Dragon Bridge – iconic symbol of the city.
Tivoli Park – the city’s green heart, perfect for a stroll.
Prešeren Square & Triple Bridge – lively central hub.
Central Market – designed by Jože Plečnik, great for local food.
Metelkova Art Centre – vibrant alternative cultural spot.
Ljubljanica River Promenade – cafés, bars, and riverside charm.
National Gallery of Slovenia – art spanning from medieval to modern.

While exploring Ljubljana, you can also take day trips to nearby UNESCO World Heritage sites, like the Škocjan Caves or the medieval town of Škofja Loka.

You’ll likely fly in and out of Ljubljana, but I recommend not leaving the city straight away and instead booking at least one night here to enjoy it.

I highly recommend a walking tour to get a feel for the city and to learn about its history. This 2.5 hour walking tour with a local guide is a great value and such a great way to explore Ljubljana.

4. Savica Waterfall – Slovenia’s Most Beautiful Waterfall

Savica waterfall is easily one of the most beautiful places to visit in Slovenia. If there is one thing that Slovenia does well, it is waterfalls, and Slap Savica waterfall is no exception! You can opt to hike the short trail from Lake Bohinj (around 40 minutes – 1 hr), or you can park at the nearby car park and hike the remaining 20 minutes up the steps to the waterfall.

The entry fee is €3 per person and this helps cover the upkeep of the area.

It’s a double waterfall, and whilst you can’t swim in it, it’s really gorgeous and well worth seeing. Some people think that the metal gate at the end and the man made steps ruin the view, however, I actually think the gate adds to the fairy tale charm that Slovenia does so well.

To help you plan your trip to Savica Waterfall, I’ve written a full handy guide here all about Savica Waterfall.

If you’re looking to take part in a day trip that includes visiting Savica Waterfall, then this one is a really great option!

5. Lake Jasna

Lake Jasna is undoubtably stunning! Within walking distance of the nearby town of Kranjska Gora (around a 10 minute walk), this man-made lake is such a beautiful spot. It’s quite small, especially when compared with Lake Bohinj or Lake Bled, but that doesn’t stop it from being staggeringly beautiful.

You can swim in Lake Jasna – I think the glacier water will be nothing but freezing, however, on a hot summers day I except it would be very refreshing! There’s a few food outlets on the Northern part of the lake, near the mountain goat statue, and a restaurant where you can get food and snacks (I recommend the frozen yoghurt!).

If you drive to Lake Jasna then you have two options to park. There’s a car park at Lake Jasna which is paid, however, park on the road nearby and parking is free.

Lake Jasna is perfectly paired with a trip to the nearby Zelenci Nature Reserve (more on that next!).

6. Zelenci Nature Reserve – Slovenia’s Most Picture Perfect Place

Zelenci Nature Reserve is easily one of the most picturesque spots in Slovenia and one of the best places to visit in Slovenia. It’s small and you don’t need long here, but it’s just down the road from the equally gorgeous Lake Jasna, so it’s worth visiting both if you have time, or if you’re staying in Kranjska Gora.

The reserve is famous for its emerald-green spring that stays at the same temperature all year round, making it look almost magical no matter when you visit. There’s a short boardwalk that takes you right out onto the water, as well as a little viewing platform where you can look across to the Julian Alps in the distance – it’s honestly picture-perfect.

You can’t swim in Zelenci, but it’s a peaceful place to walk around, take photos, and soak up the scenery. If you’re driving, there’s a small free car park nearby, and it only takes around 10 minutes to walk from there to the springs.

It’s worth noting that if you don’t have a car, there isn’t a direct bus that goes here and there also aren’t taxis frequently available.

The best way to travel here without a car is to catch the PR A22 6335 4 (61903) towards Rateče Planica bus from Kranjska Gora, from here it’s a 20 minute walk back to Zelenci Nature Reserve. It’s also worth noting that the busses are quite unreliable in Slovenia. I waited for 45 minutes for a bus which didn’t turn up. So, I started walking and 5 minutes later the bus drove past me.

I ended up walking to Zelenci Nature Reserve which took me around one hour. I was kindly dropped back by the owner of the local restaurant as there wasn’t any busses or taxis available (the kindest of strangers eh!).

It’s not a big spot, so you don’t need to plan a lot of time here – 30 minutes to an hour is plenty – but it’s one of those places that feels straight out of a fairy-tale.

7. Vogel Ski Resort

Located on the South Western side of lake Bohinj, Vogel Ski Resort is a stunning place to visit with some of the best views over Bohinj. To reach Vogel Ski Resort, take the cable car 1500 metres up high. In the winter, the area turns into a winter sports lovers heaven. In the summer it’s perfect for hiking or cycling.

The views were absolutely stunning, from the platform, you can see Lake Bohinj down below. Looking ahead, you’ll have incredible views of the Triglav Mountain and its neighbouring peaks within Triglav National Park.

The Vogel Cable Car costs: a return ticket is €33 for adults, €18 for children, and €29 for youths/seniors. The ride itself only takes around 4 minutes to get to the top.

At the summit, you’ll find a restaurant where you can relax with the views, set off on one of the hiking trails, or take the Panoramic ride on the Orlove Glave quad chair.

This usually operates daily between 9:00 – 16:00. When I went, there was a sign saying it was free, so I hopped straight on. I’d never been on a ski lift before, so it felt like a fun extra with incredible mountain scenery all around.

At the end of the lift, there’s a small café/bar where you can warm up with a hot chocolate, enjoy a bowl of soup, or even sip a glass of wine while surrounded by the peaks.

The Vogel cable car should be on every Slovenia itinerary and it is one of the top Slovenia attractions.

8. Mostinica Gorge

Mostnica Gorge is a stunning hike near Lake Bohinj, starting from Stara Fužina, on the Ribčev Laz side of the lake.

You can choose to hike just to Mostnica Gorge and back, which takes around two hours in total, or continue further on to Voje Waterfall, which will take roughly four hours altogether.

To reach the trailhead, you can either walk from the lake (about 30 minutes) or park at the car park in Stara Fužina, which is close by.

The trail is beautiful, winding along the river with plenty of scenic stops expect to pause often for photos and to soak in the views. Once you reach Mostnica Gorge, you’ll be rewarded with a series of small waterfalls, turquoise pools, and rushing water. It’s the perfect place to sit for a while and enjoy the peaceful surroundings.

If you decide to continue on towards Voje Waterfall, the path stays mostly flat and takes you through meadows and wildflowers. Along the way, you’ll pass a cosy mountain hut (Koča na Vojah) where you can stop for a drink or some food.

The waterfall itself is only a few minutes beyond the hut, so you can decide whether to pause before or after visiting. While I personally found the gorge more impressive than the waterfall, the extended hike is still absolutely worth it for the peace and the scenery and is a must for any Slovenia travel guide.

9. Soča Valley – One of the Best Places to Visit in Slovenia

The Soča River Valley is hands down one of the most breathtaking regions in Slovenia and is an absolute must if you’re exploring the west of the country. Famous for the Soča River and often called the “emerald river” thanks to its vivid turquoise colour, this are is a must-see if you’re a nature lover!

You can simply enjoy the river from the many viewpoints along the road, but the best way to experience it is to get a little closer. If you’re into adventure sports, this is also the place to try kayaking, white-water rafting, or canyoning, all of which the valley is well known for.

The valley itself stretches for miles, so you could easily spend a couple of days here. Popular spots to check out include the Great Soča Gorge, with its narrow pools and dramatic rock formations, and the Tolmin Gorges, which are tucked away but completely worth the visit.

Even if you’re not looking for adrenaline activities, just driving through the Soca valley feels magical, with the Julian Alps towering on either side and the river glistening below. It’s one of those places where every turn in the road makes you want to stop for another photo.

If you have the time, I’d recommend staying overnight somewhere in the valley to make the most of it. It’s quieter in the evenings and mornings, and you really get to appreciate just how peaceful and beautiful this part of Slovenia is. Soca Valley is one of the best places to visit in Slovenia.

10. Vintgar Gorge

Vintgar Gorge is one of the most popular attractions near Lake Bled, and for good reason. It’s a stunning 1.6 km trail that follows the Radovna River through a narrow gorge, with wooden walkways leading you past rushing rapids, emerald pools, and little waterfalls.

The walk itself is fairly easy and takes around 1–1.5 hours return, depending on how often you stop for photos (and trust me, you’ll stop a lot). It’s not a strenuous hike, but the views are absolutely incredible, and the turquoise colour of the water is almost unreal.

At the end of the gorge, you’ll find the Šum Waterfall, which is the largest river waterfall in Slovenia. There’s a little viewing platform where you can take it in before turning back the same way or looping around via the village of Šum if you’d prefer a circular route.

There is an entry fee of around €10 per adult, and tickets are best booked online in advance during peak summer months as it does get busy. Parking is available nearby for a small fee, and from Lake Bled it’s only about a 10-minute drive, making it one of the easiest day trips in the area.

Vintgar Gorge can get very crowded in high season, so I recommend going early in the morning or later in the afternoon if you want a quieter experience. Even with the crowds, though, it’s one of those must-see places that really lives up to the hype and should be on every Slovenia travel guide.

11. Bovec

Bovec is a small town in the heart of the Soča Valley and one of the best places to visit in Slovenia if you love the outdoors. Surrounded by the Julian Alps and with the emerald-green Soča River running close by, it’s not only beautiful but also one of the top spots for adventure and nature lovers.

If you’re looking for exciting things to do in Slovenia, Bovec should be high on your list. It’s known as the adventure capital of the country, with activities like white-water rafting, kayaking, canyoning, paragliding, and zip-lining all on offer. For those wondering what to do in Slovenia beyond the cities, Bovec gives you the perfect mix of adrenaline and mountain scenery.

If you’re not into adrenalin fuelled activities, don’t worry, there are plenty of walking and hiking trails around Bovec as well. One of the highlights nearby is the Great Soča Gorge, where the river cuts through smooth rock to form deep turquoise pools. It’s easily one of the most breathtaking places to see in Slovenia and a great spot for photos (though dipping your toes in will remind you just how cold the water is!).

The town itself is small and relaxed, with a few cosy cafés, restaurants, and local shops. It’s also a great base if you’re planning a longer stay in the Soča Valley, with plenty of guesthouses and hotels to choose from.

For anyone searching for what to do in Slovenia or the best places to visit in Slovenia beyond Ljubljana and Lake Bled, Bovec is a must. With its stunning alpine backdrop and endless outdoor activities, it’s one of those places to see in Slovenia that you’ll find hard to leave.

If you’re an adrenaline junky then I highly recommend rising above the Canyon Učja on the Longest Zipline Park in Europe, such a cool way to see Bovec and one of the best Slovenia attractions!

12. Piran – one of the only beaches in Slovenia

Slovenia doesn’t have a large area to offer in terms of coastline, but what it doesn’t have in size, it more than makes up for with its gorgeous little towns, and Piran is certainly one of them.

Piran is a charming seaside town on Slovenia’s Adriatic coast and easily one of the best places to visit in Slovenia if you’re looking for history, beauty, and a slower pace. Known for its Venetian architecture, narrow cobbled streets, and colourful harbour, it feels like stepping back in time.

When planning what to do in Slovenia, many travellers focus on the lakes and mountains, but Piran proves that the coast is just as magical. Spend your days wandering the old town, climbing the old city walls for panoramic views, or relaxing by the sea. Tartini Square is the heart of Piran, where you can sip coffee, watch the world go by, and soak in the atmosphere.

You’ll find fresh seafood restaurants lining the waterfront, hidden alleyways to explore, and plenty of spots to watch the sun set over the Adriatic and it’s one of the most beautiful beaches in Slovenia.

For things to do in Slovenia that combine culture and relaxation, Piran ticks every box. Visit St. George’s Parish Church for breathtaking views, take a stroll along the seaside promenade, or swim in the clear waters during summer. It’s also a great base for exploring other coastal towns like Portorož and Izola.

Whether you’re looking for what to do Slovenia in the summer months or want to discover hidden gems year-round, Piran is one of the most enchanting places to see in Slovenia and a must for any itinerary.
