How to Spend One Perfect Day in Lake Bled: The Ultimate Lake Bled Travel Guide (2025 Guide)

Here’s a quick look at what this one-day Lake Bled itinerary will cover!

Here is a handy map to help you find each spot during your Lake Bled itinerary one day:

Before we dive into the itinerary, I’ll cover everything that you need to know to plan an epic trip to Lake Bled, Slovenia.

Everything you need to know to visit Lake Bled, Slovenia

Where is Lake Bled?

Lake Bled is located in the Julian Alps in Northwestern Slovenia. It is approximately 57 km from Ljubljana and just 38 km (around 33 minutes) from Ljubljana Airport, the main airport in Slovenia. Because of how close to Ljubljana Airport Lake Bled is located, it is one of the most accessible alpine lakes in Europe, making it a perfect day trip or weekend away from most spots across Europe and the UK.

How to get to Lake Bled

Reaching Lake Bled is surprisingly easy, which makes it all the more tempting to add to your Slovenia itinerary. The closest airport is Ljubljana Jože Pučnik Airport, with regular flights connecting to major European cities. Many travellers visit Lake Bled on a day trip from Ljubljana, which takes around 45 minutes by car.

From there, you can either hire a car, the most flexible option if you want to explore the wider Julian Alps, or hop on a shuttle or bus service that runs directly to Bled from the airport.

It’s worth noting here that the public bus costs just 10 euros, but gets full very quickly and only takes cash. The shuttle bus costs €20 per person (however, the more of you, the cheaper it is). The journey takes around 45 minutes, and it will drop you wherever you want around Lake Bled. They generally wait around 15 minutes until there are a few of you in it; however, I ended up being the only one in it, so it was effectively a private taxi.

If you’re coming from Ljubljana itself, the journey is just under an hour by bus and drops you right in the centre of town, a short stroll from the lake. There’s also a train option, though the station is a little further out, so you’ll need a quick taxi or local bus to complete the trip so unless you have an Interrail pass, I don’t recommend this option as it’s not the most time or cost-effective.

When is the best time to visit Lake Bled?

The truth is, Lake Bled is beautiful all year round; it just depends on the kind of trip you’re dreaming of.

Summer (June to August) is the most popular time, with warm weather, swimming in the lake, and the busy little cafés will all be open along the shoreline. Of course, with the lovely weather, summer also brings crowds and higher prices.

Spring and autumn are a little quieter but just as magical: think wildflowers, golden forests, and cooler temperatures that are perfect for hiking. These are actually my favourite times to visit pretty much anywhere in Europe, and Lake Bled is no exception! Prices will also be lower, and there’ll be far fewer crowds than during the peak European summer.

Winter, on the other hand, turns Lake Bled into a fairy-tale scene, with snow-dusted mountains and the possibility of ice skating on the lake if it freezes. Just be sure to check that it has been deemed safe enough to do so before trying this!

Each season brings something different, but if you want fewer crowds with still-great weather, late spring (May to early June) and early autumn (September) are often the sweet spot and my personal favourite time to visit.

How to travel around Lake Bled

One of the best things about Lake Bled is its size; you don’t need a car once you’re there and, as long as you have a decent level of fitness, can walk everywhere on foot.

The lake itself is only 6km around, which makes it perfect for exploring on foot or by bike. A gentle walk around the shoreline takes about 1.5 – 2 hours, with plenty of benches and viewpoints where you’ll want to stop for photos (and maybe a slice of the famous Bled cream cake).

Cycling is another popular way to get around Lake Bled, and you’ll find rental shops in town offering bike hire and e-bikes if you want a bit of assistance. For something more romantic, traditional Pletna boats ferry visitors across to Bled Island, rowed by hand in the same way for centuries. You can also hire a small rowing boat yourself if you prefer the freedom of setting your own pace.

If you’re planning to explore beyond the lake, to places like Vintgar Gorge, Triglav National Park, or Lake Bohinj, local buses and taxis are reliable options. That said, hiring a car gives you the most flexibility. So, if you plan on pairing Lake Bled with other spots in Slovenia, I really recommend hiring a car.

To find the best car hire price, I recommend using Discover Cars before you travel, as it’s the company we use and fully recommend it.

Check prices for car hire on Discover Cars.

For those arriving with a car, it’s worth noting that Lake Bled parking can be tricky in peak season. Spaces around the lake are limited and nearly all are paid, with prices varying depending on proximity to the water. The main car parks are near Bled Castle, by the rowing centre, and close to the town centre, all within walking distance of the lake. Arrive early in the day for the best chance of finding a spot, especially in summer.

If you’re looking for other places to visit in Slovenia, I’ve written a guide on all of the best places to visit in Slovenia, which you can read here!

Perfect One-Day Lake Bled itinerary: The best thing to do at Lake Bled

Lake Bled late-morning itinerary: Walk around the lake

Once you’ve arrived in Lake Bled, the best way to see the lake and get your bearings is to walk around it. The full circular loop around the lake is 6km and will take about 1.5 hours to walk around (minus all of the photo stops that I’m sure you’ll take!). It’s a really gorgeous loop with a pretty minimal incline and a paved path the whole way.

You can also hire bikes if you prefer to cycle around the lake. This is also a great way to see it, and is perfect if you’re short on time, but still want to do the loop, which is one of the best things to do at Lake Bled.

Afternoon:  Hike up to Ojstrica or Mala Osojnica viewpoint for those iconic postcard views of the lake, castle, and Julian Alps.

One of the most impressive things that you can do in Lake Bled is to hike up to one of the viewpoints that look over the lake. This is one of the best and most impressive things to do in Lake Bled.

There are a few options to choose from (3 main ones to be specific): Ojstrica, Mala Osojnica, and Velika Osojnica. They each offer an incredible view over Lake Bled. The hikes up to these viewpoints are relatively short, but very steep, so keep that in mind when deciding to hike up to one of these viewpoints.

Ojstrica takes around 20 minutes, whilst Mala Osojnica takes around 45 minutes. There are also two ways to get to Mala Osojnica, both are incredibly steep, but one is via a set of stairs and one a very steep gravel road.

Ojstrica is the best out of the two, as it feels the most authentic and natural. It’s also conveniently the quickest to get to.

One of the most impressive things that you can do in Lake Bled is to hike up to one of the viewpoints that look over Lake Bled.

There are a few options to choose from (3 main ones to be specific): Ojstrica, Mala Osojnica, and Velika Osojnica. I got really confused and had a hard time finding each of the three viewpoints, so I hope that this helps you a little bit to figure out where they are and which one you want to hike to!

The view and sign at the top of Mala Osojnica in Lake Bled

Velika Osojnica, on the other hand, is the most challenging of the three. The hike can take up to an hour depending on your pace, but once you reach the top, you’re rewarded with a panoramic view that stretches across the lake, the island, and even out towards the Julian Alps. It’s the least visited viewpoint, so if you’re looking for a quieter experience away from the crowds, this is the one to pick.

The trails can get muddy and slippery after rain, so good shoes are a must. Hiking up to these viewpoints is one of the best things to do at Lake Bled, so if you’re able, I really recommend that you don’t skip doing one of them!

The hike up to Mala Osojnica

Practical information for the Lake Bled viewpoint hikes:

Ojstrica
Distance: 1.6 km return / 1 mile return
Elevation gain: 135 m / 442 ft
Time: 20–30 minutes
Difficulty: Easy–Moderate

Mala Osojnica
Distance: 3.5 km return / 2.2 miles return
Elevation gain: 230 m / 754 ft
Time: 45–60 minutes
Difficulty: Moderate

Velika Osojnica
Distance: 5 km return / 3.1 miles return
Elevation gain: 330 m / 1082 ft
Time: 60–90 minutes
Difficulty: Moderate–Challenging

There’s no entrance fee for any of these hikes in Lake Bled, and they all start from the western side of Lake Bled near Camping Bled, making them very easy to combine with a lakeside walk or swim afterwards.

If you don’t fancy hiking, then some other options for your afternoon in Bled include:

– Take a boat trip on Lake Bled: a great way to see the lake from the water

– Go for a swim: If you are visiting during the summer months or like a cold dip, then I definitely recommend taking a dip in the lake. There are designated swimming spots around Lake Bled and spots that you can jump into the lake from, my personal favourite was a corner on the south western shore.

– Go Canyoning around the Bohinj Valley from Lake Bled

– Go on a Lake Bled Stand-Up Paddle Boarding Tour

– Fly on Europe’s longest zip line over the Sava Dolinka River

Evening: Enjoy a local dinner and watch the sunset over the lake

There are plenty of spots to grab dinner around Lake Bled. I recommend Bled Castle Restaurant for its stunning views of Lake Bled before going to watch the sunset.

Bled Castle is also a wonderful spot to watch the sunset over Bled. I recommend heading here just before sunset so that you can watch the gorgeous sunset over the lake. Bled Castle is actually the oldest in Slovenia, dating back to the 11th century. Inside the castle grounds, you’ll also find a small museum, a wine cellar where you can taste and bottle local Slovenian wine, and even a printing workshop where you can see how books were once made.

The restaurant itself serves traditional Slovenian dishes with a modern twist, and while it is on the pricier side compared to places in town, the experience of dining with a view over Lake Bled makes it completely worth it. If you want to eat here, it’s a good idea to book a table in advance, especially in summer when it gets busy. Another bonus: your restaurant reservation includes entry to the castle grounds, so you can explore the courtyards and viewpoints without paying the usual entrance fee.

If you’d prefer something a little more casual, there are plenty of great alternatives around the lake. Restaurant Sova Bled is a favourite for its mix of local and international dishes with a cosy, relaxed feel. Finefood Berc is a smaller, family-run spot known for its warm hospitality and hearty Slovenian classics. And for a lakeside setting, Vila Preseren offers a more modern menu with tables right on the water’s edge,  perfect if you’d rather swap the castle heights for a dinner by the lake.

And of course, no trip to Bled is complete without trying a slice of the famous Bled cream cake (kremšnita) for dessert. You can find it in most cafés and restaurants around the lake, but the most iconic place to try it is at Hotel Park, where the original recipe was first created.
