The Coogee to Bondi Coastal Walk Complete Guide

If there’s one thing you have to do when visiting Sydney, it’s the Coogee to Bondi beach walk!

We spent 9 months living in Sydney and loved every second of it. The Coogee to Bondi Walk or the Bondi to Coogee Walk was one of the highlights of our time. We completed it many times. It’s the perfect weekend activity and one that should be on everyone’s Sydney bucket list.

The Bondi to Coogee walk, or how we did it; The Coogee to Bondi walk, is one of the most famous coastal walks in Sydney. Once you arrive here, it’s easy to see why it is so famous. The walk takes you along some of Sydney’s most beautiful beaches. It is a straightforward walk, making it suitable for most abilities. Your starting point depends on whether you would prefer to spend your afternoon at the famous Bondi or the more reserved Coogee.

The walk is more commonly known as the Bondi Beach to Coogee Beach walk, but doing it in reverse is far better. Especially if you are new to the city. You’ll finish the walk at the famous Bondi Icebergs, we can’t think of a better place to finish!

What should I bring with me on the walk from Coogee to Bondi?

We recommend that you wear comfortable shoes for the walk, and bring with you:

  • Sunscreen

  • A light jacket (it can get windy along the coast)

The walk has tap points along the way for you to refill your bottle, so bring a refillable. We would also recommend some comfy shoes, a picnic lunch or money to stop off in one of the many restaurants at either end of the walk or along the way and a camera to capture the beautiful views as you go!

Coogee to Bondi walk distance and time

The walk itself is 6km/3.6 miles and is generally along pretty flat paths with the occasional incline and a few lots of steps, you stick to the coastline the whole way so it is also nice and easy to navigate.

How long does the walk take?

The walk, without any stops, on average, takes around 2hrs to complete. But, with these views who’s going to take no stops? We’d recommend spending around 3-4 hours along the walk, this will give you ample time to stop, take in the views and even stop for a coffee if you want.

Things to note before doing the Bondi to Coogee Walk

Here are a few tips to get you started before you take on the walk:

  1. If you can, avoid the weekends – especially midday. Whilst the trail is fairly wide, it can get pretty busy!
  2. Bring a water bottle and sunscreen as there is no shade on the trail. You can also refill your water at plenty of places along the way. If you’d prefer you can also stop at one of the many cafes along the way
  3. If you are visiting between May and October, keep an eye out for migrating Humpback Whales! It is also possible to see Dolphins all year round, although we don’t see any at this spot.
  4. If swimming in the ocean isn’t for you there are also various ocean baths you can use along the way for free!
  5. If 5.5km just isn’t enough for you, you can continue the walk from Coogee to Maroubra, which will take another hour or so.

What will I see on the Coogee to Bondi walk?

The walk conjures up some incredible views. Here are some of our favourites:

MacKenzies Point – try and spot the whales!

MacKenzie’s Point is a beautiful spot to stop and take in the view all year round. But, between May and October you’ll have the added benefit that you might spot a Humpback whale. During these months the Humpback whale migration happens, which grows in numbers every year. You’ll need to be patient and have a little luck, but it is possible to see them here.

Visit Tamarama Beach

The next main attraction you come to is Tamarama Beach. Tamarama’s one of the smallest along the track and is one of the most beautiful little alcoves.

Keep an eye out for the ocean baths

There are plenty of ocean baths along the walk. They’re wonderful spots to stop at, swim in, watch the swimmers or just admire the views from above.

Bondi Icebergs

Your final view of the walk will be of the Sydney Icebergs, an icon and one of Sydney’s most Instagrammable spots. Sydney Icebergs is just one of the many ocean baths that dot the coastline. We recommend ending your walk from Coogee to Bondi with a drink here or one of the bars next door (for a much cheaper drink). It really is the perfect way to end a wonderful walk.
