A Sunny Christmas Spent Down Under

Christmas, in the sun?! But shouldn’t it be snowy and freezing? Not that we ever get that in England anyway but normally right up until the evening there’s still that slight bit of hope that there might be a flicker of snow, and even without it the day’s normally spent curled up by the fire in cosy clothes surrounded by an excessive amount of food which would normally last you a week. But, nope not this year for us. This year we spent the day in the boiling sun with sand between our toes and sweat lurking on us as we slaved over our roast dinner for two (because you’ve still got to have a bit of an ‘English-ness’ in there, right?).

Travelling full time inevitably means you are probably going to be spending Christmas abroad unless you want to spend a considerable amount of your savings on a flight home, which (Sorry Mum) is a tad too expensive for most backpackers.

So, Christmas. We opted to book a little studio right on Bondi beach to really get the full Ozzy Christmas vibe, which we would fully recommend at only £200 for 2 nights was a total bargain for the cute interiors and perfect location. We started the day off with a morning swim, which despite the clouds was still pretty warm, the rest of the day was spent slaving over a roast dinner (which we then spent the rest of the day devouring) opening presents, drinking a tad too much (and thinking it’s a great idea to go for a midnight swim – it’s not kids) and watching Christmas films. Elf or The Grinch? The jury is still out… Despite this not being a traditional Christmas for either one of us, we still had the best time and wouldn’t change a second of it (apart from the Boxing Day hangover maybe), proving it’s not where you spend it or how, but who you’re with, cringey sentiments and all. Merry belated Christmas everyone, now let’s go and make 2020 the best year yet!
