So, you’re thinking of visiting Skopje? Great idea!
Skopje (pronounced skop-yhee) is the enchanting capital of North Macedonia. It is packed with a delightful blend of history, culture, and modernity.
Nestled along the picturesque banks of the Vardar River, this city is a treasure trove of experiences that are sure to leave a lasting impression. There are so many things to see in Skopje, whether you’re a history enthusiast, an art lover, or a traveller seeking unique experiences. Skopje boasts an array of places to visit that are simply unmissable. In this guide, we’ll dive into the top 10 things to see in Skopje, ensuring your visit is an unforgettable adventure.

1. Get lost in the streets of The Old Bazaar
When you’re thinking of things to see in Skopje, it’s only right that we start your journey at the heart of Skopje, where The Old Bazaar (Stara Čaršija) invites you to step back in time. This historic district, spanning over 1,000 years of history, features a captivating fusion of Ottoman and Macedonian architectural styles.
Meandering through its winding streets, you’ll discover a vibrant tapestry of shops, cafes, and artisan workshops. Don’t miss the opportunity to savour traditional Macedonian cuisine and explore stalls offering handcrafted souvenirs. Truly, The Old Bazaar is among the quintessential things to see in Skopje and was one of my favourite spots on my trip through the Balkans.
2. Visit the Memorial House of Mother Teresa – top things to see in Skopje
Pay tribute to the esteemed humanitarian, Mother Teresa, at The Memorial House dedicated to her enduring legacy. Born in Skopje in 1910, Mother Teresa’s life story is beautifully showcased through a collection of personal artefacts, photographs, and captivating exhibits. This unassuming house offers profound insights into her unwavering commitment to helping those in need.
Entrance is free and takes around 30 minutes to look around. There is also a small gift shop that you can purchase souvenirs from.
3. Walk across The Art Bridge
Next, on your list of things to see in Skopje make your way to the Art Bridge, a breathtaking structure that seamlessly connects the old and new parts of the city. This iconic landmark is adorned with an impressive ensemble of 29 larger-than-life bronze sculptures, each representing a prominent figure from Macedonian history.
As you amble across the bridge, take in the awe-inspiring vistas of the Vardar River and the city’s skyline. The Art Bridge epitomizes a place where history, art, and architecture come together, solidifying its spot amongst the top things to see in Skopje.
4. Marvel at the sculptures in Macedonia square – top things to see in Skopje
Macedonia Square (Ploštad Makedonija) serves as Skopje’s bustling central hub, boasting grandeur at every turn. At its core stands the majestic statue of Alexander the Great, a symbol of immense national pride. Surrounding this imposing monument are numerous sculptures, fountains, and iconic landmarks, all make this square a very interesting place to explore. Macedonia Square is one of the must-see places to visit in Skopje.
It is thought that Skopje built over 136 statues over a 5-year period from 2010-2014 to increase tourism to the city and give tourists something to look at. Well, it certainly did that!
5. Glimpse into history at Skopje Fortress
Continue your journey back in time at Skopje Fortress (Kale), a historical citadel perched high above the city. From its vantage point, you’ll be treated to panoramic views of Skopje and its picturesque surroundings. Originally constructed in the 6th century, the fortress has witnessed centuries of history. Explore its walls and imagine some of the incredible things that it has witnessed. Explore its ancient walls and towers while immersing yourself in the city’s storied past. Skopje Fortress is a must-see among the places to visit in Skopje.
6. Go on a day trip to Matka Canyon
One of the top things to see in Skopje and a must-see place to add to any North Macedonia itinerary.
Escape the urban hustle and bustle by venturing to Matka Canyon, a natural marvel just a short drive from Skopje. This stunning canyon, carved by the meandering Treska River, boasts dramatic cliffs, lush forests, and a serene lake. Explore a network of caves, including Vrelo Cave, one of the deepest underwater caves in the world. Matka Canyon was one of my favourite spots that I visited in the Balkans.
Entrance to Matka Canyon is free. Once you’re there you can opt to simply walk around the canyon, hire a kayak to explore or enjoy a boat journey. The cost of a 45-minute boat trip is €8 making it a super affordable spot to visit!
You can opt to get a local bus #60 to Matka Canyon from Skopje or hop in a taxi. As we had limited time we opted to do this which cost £12 each way and took around 20 minutes to get here.
There’s also a beautiful hotel with a gorgeous restaurant overlooking the lake where you can grab a coffee or enjoy a meal.
7. Church of St. Panteleimon
Skopje’s spiritual heritage comes alive at the Church of St. Panteleimon. This Byzantine-style church, adorned with intricate frescoes dating back to the 12th century, showcases Macedonia’s rich religious history.
Admire the intricate artwork that graces the interior, depicting scenes from the Bible and venerated saints. The serene ambience inside the church offers a peaceful respite from the city’s hustle and bustle, firmly placing it among the notable places to visit in Skopje.
8. Skopje Aqueduct
Discover a hidden gem in Skopje with a visit to the Skopje Aqueduct. This remarkable Roman-era structure, believed to have been constructed during the reign of Emperor Justinian I in the 6th century, once supplied water to the ancient city of Skupi.
Today, the aqueduct stands as a testament to Roman engineering prowess and provides a unique backdrop for memorable photographs and moments of reflection.
9. Millennium Cross
Embark on a sky-high adventure to the summit of Mount Vodno, home to the Millennium Cross, a towering symbol of faith and endurance. Soaring to a height of 66 meters (216 feet), it ranks among the largest crosses in the world. Reach the summit by taking the cable car or hiking the picturesque trail. Your reward awaits at the top – a breathtaking panoramic view of Skopje and the surrounding countryside. Relax and enjoy the view over the awesome city.

Bonus tip! What to eat in Skopje, North Macedonia
Don’t miss all of the incredible food that can be found in Skopje. As vegetarians we’re always cautious what the food options will be. But, there’s so many dips, types of beans and salads that we were extremely happy with each meal. There’s influence from Turkey and Greece within their food which is evident throughout.

How to get to Skopje
Skopje International Airport is serviced by budget carriers from cities across Europe. If you’re flying into North Macedonia, then it is likely that you’ll start your trip through North Macedonia here.
If you’re coming from Ohrid (3 hours), Bitola (2 hours), Prilep (2 hours) or elsewhere in North Macedonia, you will easily be able to find a local bus to Skopje. There are usually multiple services throughout the day. Skopje’s main bus station is located on the east side of the city, right next to the railway station, I walked from the bus station into the centre which took around 20 minutes, making it easily doable. But, if you don’t fancy walking then you can easily hop in a taxi.
If you’re entering North Macedonia overland from a neighbouring country, a coach or minivan is still the easiest way to get here.
There are direct services to Skopje from all neighbouring countries except Greece:
- Bus from Pula Croatia (great if you’re coming from Italy or any country nearby) – 16 hours overnight – this is the route that I took
- Bus from Tirana to Skopje – 5-6 hours
- Bus from Prishtina to Skopje – 2.5-3 hours
- Bus from Sofia to Skopje – 4-5 hours
- Bus from Nis to Skopje – 3-4 hours
How to get from Skopje Airport to the city
Skopje International Airport is located 25km (roughly 30 minutes by car) east of the city centre. There are buses that run for a fairly cheap price however, they don’t run very late or, naturally, don’t take you to your door. You can also hop in a taxi which should cost you no more than £25.
Travelling around Skopje
Skopje is a fairly small city and very easy to navigate on foot. It’s also mostly flat, making it a really walkable city.
Note that there is no Uber (or Uber equivalent) in Skopje yet. A fare across town should be around 200 Denars (approx. £2.80).
