Yes, there is Uber in Portugal. However, it isn’t available in every city. However, is it the most cost-effective way of getting around the country? Generally, no, it isn’t. Uber is also not available in every city in Portugal.

About Uber in Portugal

In 2015 Uber was banned from operating in Portugal. After many protests, Uber then appealed and won the appeal, allowing the taxi app to begin operating again in the country.

All Uber cars in Portugal are visibly marked TVDE on the front window indicating that they are private vehicles with licensed drivers working through taxi applications.

Where is Uber Available in Portugal?

Uber operates in several major cities and regions across Portugal. The service is available in Lisbon, the vibrant capital city, known for its historic neighbourhoods and bustling nightlife. Porto, famous for its picturesque riverside and rich cultural heritage, also has Uber services. Additionally, you can find Uber in cities like Faro, the gateway to the stunning Algarve region, and Braga, known for its beautiful architecture and historical significance.

However, Uber is not available everywhere in Portugal. You’ll find it in the Algarve, around a lot of the popular beach towns and resorts, like Lagos and Albufeira, however, the more rural you head, the less likely you are to find Uber.

Is Uber Cheaper Than a Normal Taxi Service?

In Portugal, the cost of using Uber compared to traditional taxi services can vary depending on the time of day, traffic conditions, and specific city regulations. Generally, Uber tends to be cheaper than traditional taxis, especially for short to medium distances within cities like Lisbon and Porto. The best thing about Uber is that the pricing is transparent, with fare estimates provided upfront through the app, which helps avoid unexpected costs.

Traditional taxis, while usually reliable, often have higher base fares and often charge additional fees for luggage, nighttime rides, special holidays or airport pickups. However, during peak times or high-demand periods, Uber’s dynamic pricing can sometimes make it more expensive than a regular taxi so it always best to check with a local taxi driver their price before ordering Uber, if you are able to.

Uber in Portugal alternatives – what are they?

While Uber is a popular choice in Portugal, there are several other Uber alternatives in Portugal.

Here are some of the alternatives to Uber in Portugal:

Bolt, a ride-hailing service similar to Uber, operates in many Portuguese cities and often offers competitive pricing. For those who prefer traditional taxi services, Portugal has a well-established network of licensed taxis that can be hailed on the street or booked via phone and various apps like mytaxi that use trained, licensed and professional drivers.

Public transport in Portugal

Public transport is also another excellent alternative to Uber in Portugal. The Metro, bus and tram systems are efficient and affordable, especially in larger cities such as Lisbon and Porto. However, places such as the Algarve aren’t so well connected via public transport.

In major cities like Lisbon and Porto, local buses are operated by companies such as Carris and STCP and offer frequent and well-connected routes throughout the city and its suburbs. You can buy your tickets for the buses in Portugal at kiosks, via mobile apps, or directly from the driver, with options for single rides, day passes, and multi-trip passes.

For intercity travel, companies like Rede Expressos and FlixBus offer affordable long-distance services connecting major cities and towns across the country. These intercity buses usually have Wi-Fi and air conditioning. Schedules and routes are typically available online, and it’s recommended to book tickets in advance for longer journeys.

Car hire in Portugal

For longer distances, train networks are ideal to connect major cities and regions. Car rental services are also widely available and reasonably priced and are wonderful for exploring the country at your own pace. We hired a car in the Algarve and managed to explore a lot of the area without having to worry about ordering Ubers or taxis or waiting for public transport.

If you are able to hire a car then we recommend doing so.

Is there Lyft in Portugal?

No, Lyft is currently not available in Portugal and there are no signs of it coming to Portugal. Instead, use Uber in Portugal or Bolt to travel around.

Is Uber cheaper than a taxi in Portugal?

Is Uber in Portugal cheaper than getting a standard taxi? Yes, Uber in Portugal is slightly cheaper than regular taxis across the country, however, taxis are not as expensive as other major European cities anyway. We personally like the ease that Uber provide, the set price and being able to have access to information about your driver beforehand.

How do I download Uber?

If you don’t have Uber on your phone already, it’s very easy to download and create an account. Simply head to the app store or Google Play Store on your phone and search for Uber. Download it and follow the instructions on the screen for your setup.

You may have to confirm your phone number when you download it, so it might be worth downloading it before you travel if you don’t plan on getting an international data plan or roaming SIM card while you’re in Portugal.

Uber in Lisbon

Luckily, if you’re visiting Lisbon you’ll be pleased to know that there is Uber in Lisbon. Whilst the public transport system in Lisbon is great, Uber is a wonderful alternative if you’re looking to go somewhere quickly or specific or, if you just prefer the comfort of your own taxi.

Uber operates in Lisbon the same way it does in most other major cities across the world. It is considerably cheaper than your standard taxis in Lisbon and convenient and easy to use.  However, it is worth noting that Uber fares can increase significantly during busy periods. This can make rides more expensive than traditional taxis, especially during rush hour or major events in the city.

If you are looking to ride an Uber in Lisbon there are multiple options:

UberX:  The most popular Uber in Lisbon option, a standard car for up to 4 passengers.

UberPool: A shared car that matches you with other passengers heading in the same direction. It is usually cheaper than UberX but, it might not be the most time-efficient way to travel due to the car having to make multiple stops.

UberBlack: A luxury ride option with professional drivers and high-end vehicles.

UberGreen:  An eco-friendly Uber option using electric or hybrid cars.

UberLux: A premium luxury service with high-end cars and professional drivers.

Uber in Porto

Porto, another major city in Portugal, also has Uber. You can easily use Uber in Porto as well as the other taxi app; Bolt throughout the day and night. You can also use Uber in Porto to travel from the airport to the city centre. Uber picks up in the Porto Airport and is a cheaper alternative to usual taxis.

To travel via Uber in Porto from the airport to the city centre:

Order an Uber through the app as you have passed customs control. Drivers typically arrive in 1 or 2 minutes at the Arrivals area. As you exit the airport at the Arrivals area, cross the taxi lane and your Uber should be waiting for you on the other side. Uber drivers can only wait for a very short amount of time, so don’t order your Uber until you are almost at the pickup spot. An Uber from Porto airport to the centre should cost you between 12-16 euros.

Conclusion on Uber in Portugal

Uber in Portugal is a great alternative to traditional taxis. They’re usually cheaper (however, not by a lot), easy and convenient to use. You can easily download the Uber app and start using Uber from the moment you land at the airport.
