Dorset in the UK, is home of the Jurassic Coast, has continued to be one of Britain’s top holiday destinations year after year, and it just so happens to also be the beautiful county that we’re both from!

There are so many places to explore for days out in Dorset. With its beautiful viewpoints, miles of pristine beaches in Dorset, dramatic coastline, and fairy-tale countryside, it’s easy to see why there are so many places to visit in Dorset, even if we are a little biased! Plus, why so many people love their days out in Dorset. Full of Ancient Castles (ruins or not), on the border of the New Forest packed full of places such as Lulworth Cove, to the millionaire’s strip of Sandbanks all topped off with a good measure of classic English Heritage making you constantly feel as if you’ve gone back in time! Dorset is (if we do say so ourselves) one of the most beautiful places to visit in England.

You could easily spend a week travelling around Dorset and still feel as if you’ve only scratched the surface. We both grew up in the county of Dorset in the UK and when we’re not off exploring the world we live in either Poole or Bournemouth in Dorset so we like to say that we are experts in the coastal county and know all of the best places to visit in Dorset.

It’s a short (around 2 hours) drive from London. Sandwiched between the incredible counties of Devon and Hampshire. If you are looking for places to visit in Dorset and the surrounding areas then you won’t need to look very far.

1. Worbarrow Bay & Tyneham

This a spot that is a bit more ‘off the beaten track’ compared to the usual spots that can be found when visiting Dorset in the UK. But, we couldn’t not include this incredibly beautiful spot, Sometimes referred to as Tyneham Beach.

2. Corfe Castle

A different spot from the usual coastal towns that you find on the things to do in Dorset list. But, the crumbling walls of Corfe Castle make for an epic place to visit in Dorset whether you’re bringing the whole family or coming as a couple. Built by William the Conqueror in the 11th century, Corfe Castle is one of England’s oldest standing castles. It is also notably one of the first stone castles ever built.

If you are part of the National Trust then you can visit for free! If not a ticket costs £11 for an adult and £5.50 for a child.

However, if you’re on a budget then you can still get an equally incredible view of the castle from the neighbouring hills or from the quaint little town of Corfe itself.

3. Sherborne Castle

Another castle to add to the top things to do in Dorset! Sherborne Castle and its grounds are a beautiful place to spend the day. Standing within a 1,200-acre beautiful grounds which formed a small part of the 15,000-acre Digby estate. You can easily spend a whole day walking around the castle and the grounds. Entrance to just the gardens costs £12 and £16.50 for entrance to the gardens and castle.

4. Chesil Beach

A beautiful pebble beach along the Jurassic coast just around the corner from the isle of Portland. Stretching a whopping 18 miles long northwest from Portland to West Bay. Make sure you add this spot to your list of places to visit in Dorset and things to do near Weymouth.

5. Brownsea Island – Top places to visit in Dorset

A unique island taking centre stage in Poole Harbour. Brownsea Island is a National Trust owned and is only accessible via ferry from Poole Quay. Famous for its red squirrels, it is an area of outstanding beauty and is surrounded by dramatic views of the Purbeck Hills. 6. Studland

One of the most beautiful, rugged beaches in Dorset can be found along the Jurassic Coast. Studland Bay. With four miles of fine golden sand and views out to Old Harry Rocks, Studland is an essential day out in Dorset, no matter the time of year. Enjoy lazing on the beach, paddleboarding or even just walking along the long strip of sand.

If you fancy treating yourself during your visit to Studland then pop into The Pig on the beach for a coffee or cocktail depending on what mood you’re in! It’s a large restaurant sitting on the cliffside with a wonderful interior and views complete with a restaurant and bar. If this isn’t your thing then there are also plenty of cafes dotted along the beachside where you can grab a coffee for your walk.

7. Durdle Door – Top places to visit in Dorset in the UK

When you think of places to visit in Dorset, Durdle Door is most likely the spot that springs to mind. An iconic stone arch that was created when the sea rocked through the Portland limestone around 10,000 years ago leaving behind the beautiful structure that we see today. Durdle Door is an epic day trip and place to visit in Dorset.

To access Durdle Door (located in between Wareham and Weymouth), park in the car park at the top and walk down the path towards Durdle Door and Man O’War beach. The walk takes approximately 35 minutes. At the bottom of the walk turn right and you’ll be met with the incredible view of Durdle Door.

Tip – Parking is a flat fee of £12.00 to park all day or £6.00 for up to 4 hours BUT once you have paid you can use this same ticket for the car parks at Lulworth Cove and Lulworth Castle, 3 for the price of one!

8. Lulworth Cove

If Durdle Door springs to mind when you think of places to visit in Dorset, then you most probably also think of Lulworth Cove. This world-famous spot is known for its secluded beach complete with clear blue water and is surrounded by unique geological landforms including Stair Hole. For an epic day out along the Jurassic Coast, we recommend combining a visit to Lulworth Cove with a trip to Durdle Door.

If you’re feeling energetic and adventurous you can opt to hike over the hill from one spot to the next. To walk to Durdle Door follow the coastline west. If you are in Lulworth Cove, stand facing away from the sea, and you will see a big hill up ahead to the left. From here you will see a path leading over it, with probably a lot of people also walking over it. Head up this path and follow it until you reach Durdle Door. The walk takes approximately 20-30 minutes and is 1.5 miles in distance. The walk offers amazing views across the Jurassic Coast.

9. Hengistbury Head

Sitting at the other end of Dorset in the UK is one of the top places to visit in Bournemouth; Hengistbury Head. A south-facing pebble beach with some of the clearest water that we have seen in England, surrounded by imposing clay and ironstone cliffs. Walk a little further around Hengistbury Head and you’ll be met with the sandy beaches Dorset of Mudeford spit. Home to a series of famous colourful beach huts; the most expensive ones in the world!

10. Sandbanks, Poole – Top places to visit in Dorset

Speaking of the most expensive in the world, Dorset is also home to Sandbanks. A golden strip of sand jutting out into the water, home to some of the most expensive houses in the world. A narrow spit of around 1 km² or 0.39 sq mi extending into the mouth of Poole Harbour. Spend an afternoon here lazing on the beach or grab a bite to eat at one of the beachside cafes, bars or restaurants. Poole is one of the best seaside towns in Dorset.

Sandbanks is one of the beaches in Dorset that are dog friendly. Just note that not all of the beach is throughout the year, so be sure to check the signs.

Jazz Cafe is a great little spot on Shore Road with sea views and a wide choice of food. Or, keep walking a little further around on the strip and you’ll reach Lazy Jacks, a little cafe that makes you feel as if you’ve stepped into the Caribbean. Complete with epic pizzas, tacos and a brunch menu complete with epic pancake stacks.

11. Bournemouth

The vibrant city of Bournemouth is one of the largest in Dorset. Complete with a beautiful coastline, a jutting pier with rock climbing and a zip wire, a big wheel and shops and restaurants galore.

The Beach

If you’re heading to Bournemouth then don’t miss paying a visit to the large stretch of sand where you’ll discover another epic seaside towns in Dorset. There is an abundance of restaurants dotted along Bournemouth Beach complete with incredible views. During the summer months quite a few pop-up bars also open, making you feel like you’ve been transported somewhere far more exotic.

Bournemouth also has set parts of the beach that are one of the beaches in Dorset that are dog friendly.

The Pier

Complete with a restaurant, an indoor rock climbing wall (Rock Reef), (we recently went here on a date night and couldn’t recommend it enough), a Zip Wire and classic amusements. The pier is the perfect spot to channel your inner child and spend a few hours having good old-fashioned fun.

The Town

Complete with shops, and a good mix of independent and chain restaurants. Plus, the gardens and some wonderful coffee shops. Spend a few hours exploring the town before heading to the beach or pier. Or onwards to one of our other top places to visit in Dorset.

12. Westbourne

One of our favourite spots in Dorset. Technically still Bournemouth, we couldn’t not include Westbourne. But, we thought that the little town of Westbourne deserved its own spot on the list. Full of independent coffee shops, boutique clothing and gift shops and an old-school shopping arcade. If you like any of the above then Westbourne is well worth spending a few hours in.

13. Dancing Ledge

Dancing Ledge is a natural shelf of flat rock jutting out into the sea. The rugged platform was created by the quarrying of Purbeck Limestone around 200 years ago. When the tide is right a wonderful little natural swimming pool forms in the rocks. This makes it the perfect spot (if you don’t mind cold water) to jump in and enjoy a summer’s evening dip. Located just around the corner along the Jurassic Coast from Swanage, Dancing Ledge is a great stop-off if you’re hiking the coastal path. To get down to the water’s edge climb down the steep stone steps. It’s a bit of a jump down and a hike back up so make sure you’re ready for an extra bit of a workout!

14. Old Harry Rocks – Top places to visit in Dorset

Standing tall in the water at the Southern end of Studland lies Old Harry Rocks. The three chalk formations are one of the most iconic and popular places to visit in Dorset. Old Harry Rocks can be reached on foot from nearby Studland or Swanage. If you want a bit of a shorter walk then you can park in the National Trust car park at Studland and walk the rest of the way. The walk is fairly flat and easy the whole way. Once you reach Old Harry Rocks spend some time taking in the views with either a picnic, coffee or a good book.

15. Swanage

Swanage is the epitome of a classic English seaside towns in Dorset’s located on the Isle of Purbeck. The coastal areas and nearby areas make for the perfect day out. Complete with an iconic steam railway, shows of traditional Punch and Judy on the beach, a beautiful beach in a sweeping bay, and plenty of nearby nature. As well as classic English fish and chip shops, seafront amusements and English pubs. The seaside town of Swanage is a wonderful place to spend a few hours, especially if you have children with you. We recommend taking a walk to the old pier as well if you have the time!

16. A day trip to The Blue Pool

The Blue Pool is a gorgeous Blue Pool, nestled in the heart of Dorset. It is a natural attraction: a hidden gem nestled amidst the enchanting landscapes of Wareham. If you have a few days in Dorset then we really recommend adding this spot to your list of places to visit in Dorset. You can walk around the whole pool and admire the views, there’s also kids play areas and a tea room. Entrance cost is £7.50 for adults £3.75 for children and under 5’s are free.

17. Visit Portland

Just past the holiday town of Weymouth lies The Isle of Portland. A tied island, 6 kilometres long by 2.7 kilometres wide, set out into the English Channel. If you drive through Chesil Beach, the beach connecting Weymouth to Portland, you’ll drive up a huge hill. Finally, once you reach the top you’ll be greeted with a beautiful view over the Isle of Portland peninsula.

18. Ride the Swanage Railway

If you’re looking for a bit of nostalgia, you really can’t beat a ride on wonderful Swanage Railway, one of the best-preserved steam railways in the country. The old steam train is a fascinating way of travelling between the town of Norden to Corfe Castle & one of the top seaside towns in Dorset: Swanage.

We loved looking around Corfe Station, it really does feel as if you have stepped back in time and into a story book.

How to get to Dorset in the UK

Dorset is located in South West England and is easily accessible via car or public transport from all over England. If you are coming from further afield then you can opt to fly to Bournemouth Airport or if travelling from a closer spot in England then you can get a train into Dorset. National Express also runs regular buses from all over the country into these 3 places.

Dorset is around a 2.5-3 hour drive from London travelling through the beautiful New Forest.
