We recently went on a wonderful Christmas trip from Salzburg to Munich which ended in Paris. We travelled the whole way (after flying into Salzburg) by train. This means we travelled by train from Salzburg to Munich.

Thankfully, what most of Europe does very well is train travel which results in many easy trips to and from various countries or cities. Undoubtedly, the train is the best way to explore the breathtaking landscapes of magnificent Austria and wonderful Germany.

How far is Salzburg from Munich?

The distance between Munich and Salzburg is around 150km. This means that the drive between the two cities will take you about 1.5 – 2 hours. The journey, whether driving or catching the train from Salzburg to Munich is beautiful. Full of twists and turns in nature. The close proximity of the two cities means that they are close enough for a perfect getaway, but far enough for a wonderful adventure-filled weekend away.

How long does the train from Salzburg to Munich take?

Salzburg is literally just over the border of Germany into Austria so it’s the perfect spot for a weekend away from either of the cities or to combine a visit to both in one trip. The train journey from Salzburg to Munich and vice versa takes 1 hour and 40 minutes. Whilst this is how long the journey should take the actual time may vary depending on the type of train and any stops along the way.

Is the train journey between Salzburg and Munich scenic?

Most definitely! The train journey showcases the stunning landscapes of the Bavarian region. As the train travels through the charming countryside, you’ll be treated to rolling hills, quaint villages, and glimpses of the Alps in the distance. The train journey is also especially beautiful when you chug across the river and catch a glimpse of the Hohensalzburg Fortress for the first time!

Top tip: The mountains will be visible on the left-hand side of the train as you travel from Salzburg to Munich.

Do you need a passport to go from Salzburg to Munich?

Yes! If travelling from Salzburg to Munich be prepared to show your passport or if you’re an EU citizen some form of ID. Travelling via train from Salzburg to Munich requires crossing an international border so be prepared to show your passport. Since both Germany and Austria are in the “Schengen Zone” there is no longer an official passport control.  However, there can be occasional, random checks, so make sure that you have your passport with you, just in case.
