Where is Belgium?

Belgium is a small but strategically located country in Western Europe, bordered by France to the southwest, Luxembourg to the southeast, Germany to the east, and the Netherlands to the north. It has a short coastline along the North Sea to the northwest. Despite its modest size, Belgium plays a significant role as a cultural and political hub, being home to the headquarters of the European Union and NATO. Its central location makes it an ideal starting point for exploring the rest of Europe.

When is the best time of year to visit Belgium?

The best time to visit Belgium is during the spring (April to June) and autumn (September to October) months. Known as shoulder season, during these periods, the weather is mild, and the tourist crowds are smaller compared to the peak summer season. Spring is particularly beautiful with blooming flowers and numerous outdoor festivals, while autumn offers beautiful shades of reds and oranges.

If you’re interested in experiencing Belgian culture at its peak, consider visiting during one of the country’s many festival periods. Some of the best cities in Belgium, such as Ghent and Brussels, host spectacular events like the Ghent Festival in July or the Brussels Christmas Market in December.

The most beautiful cities in Belgium that you need to visit

1. Brussels

Brussels, the capital city of Belgium, is undeniably one of the best cities in Belgium to visit. As the political heart of Europe, Brussels boasts an impressive blend of history, culture, and modernity. Visitors can marvel at the stunning Grand Place, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its ornate guild halls and the iconic Town Hall. Don’t forget to pay a visit to Manneken Pis, a very small, but very famous, statue of a little boy urinating into the fountain (possibly the strangest monument we’ve seen). The city’s vibrant culinary scene is another highlight, offering world-renowned chocolates, waffles, and some world-famous Belgian beers. Art enthusiasts will appreciate the Magritte Museum and the Royal Museums of Fine Arts. Brussels stands out as a must-see destination among the best Belgian cities.

The little city of Brugge is often named the most beautiful city in Belgium. It’s like stepping into a fairytale with its canals, cobbled streets and Mediaeval buildings. Often called the “Venice of the North,” its picturesque canals, quaint bridges, and beautifully preserved architecture make it one of Belgium’s most enchanting cities. It’s our favourite city in Belgium for this reason. The historic centre of Bruges is so historically significant that it has been awarded a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Packed full of chocolate box houses (and chocolate shops!), craft beer offerings and a large network of canals. Bruge, despite its small size, has so much to see.

Here are the top things we recommend doing while you’re in Bruges:

  • Spend some time in the historic centre
  • Sample some local chocolate from a chocolatier
